Alloa Athletic recorded their second 2-2 draw in four days but that was only half the story of a thrilling match.

In a mix of fine attacking football and naive defending, the woodwork was also struck three times and both teams had a string of near misses as Morton failed to get the win they needed to boost their promotion hopes.

The visitors, who had won 6-1 on their last visit to Recreation Park, took half-an-hour to wake up and by that time they were already trailing to an early goal from defender John Ovenstone who reacted quickest after Jamie Stevenson's free-kick had been parried.

It might have been 2-0 after 32 minutes when a long ball found Ross Hamilton but the home striker tried to cut inside onto his left foot and the chance was lost.

Morton finally made a worthwhile contribution in the 35th minute and former Scotland cap Andy McLaren was left seething when his 20-yard drive rattled back off the underside of the crossbar.

But eight minutes later McLaren won the free-kick which led to his side's equaliser as Peter Weatherson fired a low shot through the wall and into the far corner.

Barely 30 seconds later Jose Quitongo restored Alloa's advantage with a spectacular 22-yard strike.

Further excitement followed in the second half with Graeme Brown hitting the woodwork with a header and then seeing another effort blocked by David McGurn before Hamilton squandered the rebound.

At the other end, Chris Templeman wasted two free headers and Shaun Dillon clipped the bar with a third. McLaren's follow-up sailed over the top but Morton deservedly drew level for the second time when Chris Millar swept home Jim McAlistair's pass.
